Caterpillar straddles two worlds: on-highway truck engines (C7 through C18) and the largest off-highway equipment fleet on earth. Cat ET (Electronic Technician) covers both — making it the highest-leverage single OEM package for mixed truck-and-equipment operations.
CAT coverage: engines, models and systems
Our CAT diagnostic coverage spans every current platform and the legacy fleets still on the road. The table below maps the engines and vehicle families you can scan, code and program with a dealer-level setup. If your truck is missing, run it through the compatibility checker or ask us on WhatsApp — coverage updates land monthly.
| Platform | Engines / Systems | Model Years | Dealer Software | Required Adapter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| On-highway | C7, C9, C11, C13, C15, C16, C18, 3406E | 1998–2012 (truck) / current (industrial) | Cat ET | Comm Adapter 3 |
| Off-highway | Excavators, dozers, loaders, graders | 2000–2026 | Cat ET | Comm Adapter 3 |
| Industrial & gen-set | C4.4–C175 industrial, marine, power gen | 2000–2026 | Cat ET | Comm Adapter 3 |
| Transmissions | Cat CX/TH powershift, vocational | 2005–2026 | Cat ET | Comm Adapter 3 |
OEM software vs multi-brand: which CAT setup fits your shop
Cat ET ($1,250/yr factory licensing) provides full diagnostics, calibrations, injector coding, and flash programming across the entire Cat product line — one license covers truck engines and equipment alike. Licensing is tied to a serial number per machine family, so tell us your fleet mix and we will configure it correctly the first time.
Shops that only touch CAT iron get the most depth per dollar from the OEM package. Mixed fleets usually pair one OEM license with a multi-brand platform — see the OEM vs aftermarket capability breakdown before you spend.
What it costs — real numbers, not “call for price”
Cat ET license ~$1,250/yr. Genuine Comm Adapter 3 (part 538-5051, superseding 466-6258): $1,095 — clones at $180 fail on newer ADEM 4/5 ECUs. Complete ET + CA3 Toughbook kit: $4,595. Off-highway shops should also see the off-highway hub for multi-brand alternatives.

Does Cat ET cover on-highway truck engines?
Yes — C7 through C18 truck engines plus the 3406E legacy line are all covered by the same Cat ET installation used for equipment. Caterpillar exited the on-highway market after 2010, but millions of those engines remain in service and ET supports them fully.
What is the difference between Comm Adapter 2 and Comm Adapter 3?
CA3 (538-5051) added J1939 high-speed and the bandwidth required for ADEM 4/5 ECU programming. CA2 still works for basic diagnostics on pre-2007 engines but cannot program newer machines. We stock genuine CA3 only.
Will a $180 CA3 clone work?
For read/clear on older equipment, often. For programming newer ECUs, clones fail mid-flash at rates we would never accept for a customer. Given an ECU replacement costs $2,500+, genuine is the only rational choice.
