Every platform looks affordable in year one and different by year five. These tables compute the full ownership picture with published renewal pricing — the comparison no vendor publishes because it makes the cheap options look expensive and vice versa.

The typical shop combination

The most common professional setup we sell — one multi-brand platform plus OEM software for the core brand — runs roughly $11,000–$13,000 over five years all-in. Against dealer diagnostic labor ($400–$800/visit) that combination breaks even at roughly 20–30 diagnostic events across five years: about one every two months. Everything beyond that is profit or avoided cost.

Value verdict

Autel MS909CV for lowest TCO with tablet convenience; Jaltest for the best capability-per-dollar with guided diagnostics; OEM software where programming revenue lives. The expensive mistake is buying twice — pick the platform that matches your three-year workload, not this month's budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TEXA worth the highest TCO?

For European-heavy fleets and ADAS work, yes — its coverage depth on those platforms has no cheaper equivalent. For US-only general shops, Jaltest or JPRO delivers more per dollar. See Jaltest vs TEXA.

Do renewal prices ever drop?

Rarely — but lapsed-renewal penalty pricing is worse. Some platforms (Jaltest) renew at standard rates after lapses; OEM tools that deactivate entirely (INSITE) make lapses expensive in downtime rather than money.

Where does hardware fit in TCO?

Adapters and laptops are one-time costs with 5–7-year lifespans, so they amortize well. Budget an occasional cable replacement and, on year 4–5, a laptop battery. Hardware is the small part of TCO; licensing is the big one.
